PSC HAND SAFETY
Select by exposure
Start with what the hand touches, where contact can occur and how the task is performed.
Start with the job
Identify the material, sharp edges, handling movements and working conditions. Note whether the hand is exposed to abrasion, cuts, back-of-hand contact, heat or chemicals. Record where the hand can be kept away from the hazard before selecting PPE.
Choose the palm for the surface
A package-handling grip, a dotted synthetic palm and a nitrile-coated knit serve different needs. Check grip in the actual dry, wet or oily conditions, with the tools and materials used on site. The manufacturer’s grip scores help compare products but do not guarantee performance on every surface.
Read cut and impact ratings separately
A cut rating does not establish impact protection. ANSI cut levels and EN 388 cut markings use different tests and should not be treated as interchangeable numbers. ANSI/ISEA 138 provides an impact performance level where the model has that stated rating. An EN 388 P marking indicates the relevant impact test requirement has been met; it is not an ANSI level. The older Ironclad Glovepedia also discusses its own impact testing using a shaped hand surrogate. These manufacturer research methods are separate from standard markings. Research examples do not guarantee protection against fractures.
Check fit and movement
Try gripping, fastening, using controls and performing the normal task. Ensure the glove stays in place and does not create excessive pressure or loose material. Follow the Size Guide and assess a trial pair where possible. Confirm that a touchscreen feature works with the actual equipment before relying on it.
Inspect and replace
Check the palm, seams, protective elements and labels before use. Follow the manufacturer’s care instructions and the site replacement policy. Do not keep using a glove whose damage compromises its intended protection.
Ask PSC for a shortlist
Send the task, material, surface condition, current glove, required sizes and quantities. Include a task photograph where permitted. We will help narrow the range and identify points to evaluate during a trial. Glove selection for rotating machinery must follow the site’s entanglement assessment.
